Greek Pork Meatballs: Pork Keftedes

These are very nice, light little meatballs.  Not dense like at some American-Italian restaurants, these one’s will fall apart when you spear them with a fork.  Because of this I make them small for a meze – no need to mess around, just eat them in one bite.   I don’t know about you, but I think [...]

Anxiety and Alcohol

Hello.  My name is Joanne and I am an alcoholic.

This is not a simple world to navigate.  It feels like it should be;  we are the lucky one’s,  we live in the United States of America.  Land of the Free.  Home of the Brave.

Do you feel either of those things?

I don’t know, maybe I’m alone in [...]

Cream of Broccoli & Potato Soup

I realize that it’s not exactly soup season.  But one of my favorite people just had some dental work done (heard on the way out of the dentist’s office: “intelligent design, my ass”) so I’m making soup.

1 bunch of broccoli (this is a variable that is up to you)
4 red potatoes (the larger sized)
1/4 cup butter
2 [...]

Grief

By Kelly Easton

The woman had lost her son in the war.  It was never a clear war to her mind: a president, a dictator, a dry parched land, weapons of mass destruction that were there and then not.

She walked along the beach, empty except for a couple who sat watching the red and purple ridges of [...]

Crispy Panko Breaded Fried Shrimp

1 lb raw shrimp with the tails on – it’s that frozen blue bag at Costco – you only need half of it.

1/4 teaspoon baking powder
3 egg whites
1/3 cup water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Panko bread crumbs

BOOKS: A Love Story

By Kelly Easton

1

Because you’ve been told you need to do something with your life, you decide to buy a bookstore.  You’ve always loved books: the glossy covers, the pages like fresh leaves, the photograph of the writer, accompanied by a blurb: “…lives in Vermont with her two children and cat; writes [...]

Baked Brie with Carmelized Onions

When you’re done with these onions, they will have been so manipulated and macerated that they won’t look anything like what they are. The little bit of sugar brings out the natural sweetness in the onions and it’s pretty addictive. The original recipe says that it serves 8, but if 8 people sit down [...]

Prayer

It was a dark and stormy night.  I was driving home from Newport Beach and after I had negotiated the transition from the 57 to the 10 and was maneuvering Kellogg Hill my car went into a hydroplane.

Huh.  Check that out.  Steering wheel doesn’t work, breaks don’t work, I’m in God’s hands now at 65 miles [...]

Stuffed Courgette Flowers

I don’t fry things very often because I hate the way it makes the house smell. But these are worth it, I think. The batter is very similar to a chili relleno. This is a good one if you’ve planted too many zucchini and you want to nip that problem in the bud…

16 fresh zucchini (courgette) [...]

The "Twilight" Franchise

Even the candy is bad. Unforgiveable.

Every once in a while I’ll read a book and my reaction is “maybe enough books have been written and we should all just catch up on the old ones”. A good example is “Twilight”, I’ve not read the 3 follow up books and I will [...]
